To keep the intro short, this post will be sharing two samples I received as GWP, the Ja Saeng Essence and Jin Hae Yoon Sun Wrinkle from Korea The History of Whoo.

Bichup Ja Saeng Essence (KRW160000/45ml)

 .

Bichup Ja Saeng Essence is a signature serum of The History of Whoo, it has similar product position as Advanced Night Repair serum under Estee Lauder, targeting wrinkle improvement and enhancing skin self-healing ability. It contains three court secret compounds (Gongjinbidan, Kyungokbidan, Chungsimbidan) to enable skin self-strengthening against environmental damage.

 .

.

This is pricey, that would be great to get a sample first to see if it is what we like. The essence has gel and hydrating texture, feeling smooth and slick while spreading on skin, then conveyed to gel-sheen finish and a little bit sticky to touch. From its ingredient list, it contains various humectants and oriental plant extracts, though I could not vouch the effectiveness of those plant extracts in beauty product but it should be helpful to treat dryness because of those humectants. I was rather disappointed of its artificial fragrance since I was expecting natural scent or a non-fragranced essence. The pleasant floral scent was similar to the aroma of Whoo Gongjinhyang series but not identical. Overall it was a nice hydrating essence that able to iron out the fine line instantly (although temporary) but would still need moisturizer afterwards for complete moisturizing. My sensitive skin also experienced no irritation or breakout from testing it for a week.

.

.

I did this test on whim on the other day, trying to have some ideas between serum and lotion but no useful conclusion is drawn. I post this test anyway just to give you all a small idea how moisturizing of this essence compared to the other three first-step products. Yes, it is most moisturizing among them and also the thickest.

Jin Hae Yoon Sun Wrinkle SPF46/PA++ (KRW55000/45ml)

 .

Gongjinhyang Jin Hae Yoon Sun Wrinkle is marketed as an anti-aging sun cream. As Gongjinhyang series is created for women from late 20s to 30s, that is no surprise to see an anti-wrinkle sun cream in the series. It said to improve wrinkles resulting from dryness aside the UV-blocking.

 .

.

This has pleasant floral scent too, something different from the scent of Gongjinhyang series. The finish is either radiant or shinny depending on the skin condition (dry/oily) but it leaves no unnatural white residue. I do think Korean sunscreens (eg: Rojukiss Protox day cream and Laneige Sensitive Mild UV protector) commonly have cream texture while Japanese sunscreen majority is appearing more lightweight, this probably because the climate in Korea is drier compared to Japan.

 .

.

For drier skin, this sun cream was feeling non-heavy and easily dried on skin in less humid day (humidity <50%). However, it was slightly rich for oilier skin and skin was tacky until the skin started excreting sebum, or applying any makeup foundation/powder can ease the tacky touch too. On the other hand, the compact powder caked on skin due to the tacky base. Referring to above test pictures, I tested this both to my face and hand, it seemed to be okay as makeup base when tested on hand, so I think the cakey finish probably due to my uneven facial skin texture (larger pores at least). Meanwhile, this is also water-proof, I definitely need proper makeup removal at the end of the day. I tried it four times only, no skin irritation had been noticed. In short I still love Japanese milky sunscreen, not to mention I do not believe in “anti-wrinkle” sunscreen.

In Yang Balancer (KRW55000/150ml) and  In Yang lotion (KRW70000/110ml)

 .

Yellow-packaging Gongjinhyang is the basic line of Whoo, knowing as a secret royal court formula for empresses. Gongjinhyang (拱辰亨) – Containing “Ginjinbidan” and “Wild ginseng Cordyces sinensis”, through the oriental principle of Yin-Yang harmony, it helps keeping skin balanced, increasing water and diminishing fire to enhance moisture within the skin, giving skin a new radiance and smoothness.

 .

These trial kits were given with every $100 Whoo purchase at Korea duty free shop last year summer.

 .

I have two sets of the In-Yang Balancer and Lotion (6ml each), as I never tried the old formula so I could not do any comparison here. According to those who are familiar with this brand (click here and here), the renewed version contains newly added ingredients Aloe Vera and Metasequoia Glyptostroboides extracts that aim to enhance the effect of the old version.

 .

.

The In-Yang balancer has runny consistency but not completely watery. As you can see from the above pictures, it has hint of gel feature that can be easily sensed upon smoothing on skin, it is non-sticky and is easily absorbed by skin. Frankly… the most visible function of this balancer is to prepare my nose and mind for the strong fragrance.

 .

 .

The In-Yang lotion on the other hand is very moisturizing, it is more moisturizing than the whitening lotion of Seol (Whoo’s whitening line) and Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion. I think the In-Yang lotion is too rich for oilier skin. Using both In-Yang balancer and In-Yang lotion already provide sufficient moisture for combination to normal skin in tropical climate. Oilier skin definitely needs less amount for each application where drier skin need extra moisturizing cream on top. Imagine the first sample set lasted about 3 weeks trial in humid season while the second set only lasted for a week when weather is less humid. Talking about the skin care effect, it has kept my skin soft and moisturized, I think my skin looked glowing in the morning eventhough I did not sleep enough, but the skin texture and fine lines had not seen improved.

 .

 .

As Gongjinhyang is using oriental herbs as main ingredients, I actually expect it has herbal scent. However it gives me a feeling as though I apply an elegant light perfume to my skin that sometimes made me feel dizzy (FYI, I have sensitive nose). It is a pleasant rosy kind of scent and it does lingering for long while, if you love the scent then you would enjoy it but I personally much preferring natural herbal scent of Sulwhasoo basic line.

Kitchen grape seed oil has been an essential step of my daily cleansing routine more than two years at this time of writing, and I never thought to quit. I feel very satisfied and grateful by using a “budget x effective + gentle” product everyday … until I wanted to purchase  a non-greasy-makeup-remover to clean my makeup puff and face makeup occasionally, in addition, it should be convenient to fix small makeup mistake without going through proper cleansing routine. So you can see all these reasons brought me to buy a cleansing water.

.

.

If I have an option, I would be happy to purchase Uriage Tolederm Soothing Cleansing Water but since it is not available in Thailand, I would have to get something else. Between Biore cleansing oil and Neutrogena cleansing water, I decided on Neutrogena because it has similar surfactant (cleansing agent) with Uriage’s and has better ingredient than Biore’s. In fact both Biore and Neutrogena received good reviews online, just I wanted to try cleansing water more. I bought this THB339/200ml during promotion.

.

.

The cleansing water is watery clear and it has deliciously sweet scent. In order to remove the makeup thoroughly, I usually use 3-4 cotton pads until I see no makeup trace on cotton pad. The last cotton pad is normally use for double-checking purpose because I think my facial cleanser is too mild to remove any makeup residue. Regrettably, my eyes felt rather sour and uncomfortable afterwards, I swear I was wiping the eye makeup off very gently but for sensitive thin skin, both chemicals in the formula and physical friction of cotton pad/wiping can lead to irritation. As soon as I cleansed the eye area with clean-water-soaked cotton pad again, my eyes were feeling eased immediately, therefore this was certainly not something mild to sensitive skin.

.

-(=∩)– Cleansing Power Indicator -[=∩]

It does not possess very strong cleansing power particularly to makeup like creamy BB cream/foundation, very waterproof eyeliner/mascara and heavy shimmering lipstick, remember it is not heavy-duty type of cleanser (in fact no cleansing water means to be). On the other side, it has no problem to remove light makeup like sunscreen, light BB cream, pressed powder, eyebrow pencil, non-waterproof mascara and eye shadow.

After using this several times for makeup removing, now I solely used it to cleanse my makeup powder puff – The History of Whoo compact powder (pressed powder) and SKII Signature cream-in-foundation (creamy powder foundation). The Whoo powder puff is well-cleansed by this (still need second cleansing by facial cleanser later) but the cleansing water did not resolve the makeup stain on the SKII makeup puff, in the end I simply used soap to cleanse the SKII’s one and it worked fine (——“). I can use soap for both makeup puff  actually.

.

It is made in Korea

.

Practically oil is best for removing any type of makeup, even kitchen oil. My skin likes oil and has no problem with it, I do not mind blurring eyesight (temporary) sometimes, so I will be continued sticking to kitchen grape seed oil without second thought. Nevertheless, in order to make myself feeling better of the mistake (><  b),  cleansing water is indeed flexible to correct a small makeup mistake especially when I was experimenting new makeup look at home and it is handy to use on special occasion (eg: on plane) too.  Overall this Neutrogena makeup cleansing water is not poorly delivered but not exceptional too, if I want to try cleansing water again in future, I will strictly try those formulated for sensitive skin only.

Ahem…these anti-trouble patches are partly a capricious purchase as I don’t need this kind of acne treatment, but I assumed they may be good for acne skin (also bought for my ex-giveaway) after reading several positive Korean reviews online, you can see from the below attached picture, their acnes did improve after all.

 .

Images source: here, here, here, here, here and here

.

I’ve a major breakout on forehead last month, they’re like springing up mushroom after rain. Yeah! I chuckled over the breakout … finally I can test these anti-blemish patches out. Having acne was definitely not fun, I was optimistic simply because I knew they (adult acne) most probably won’t be lingering for too long according to my past experience. I used them at night mostly, but also used the patch in day if I didn’t have to go out on that day.

 .

Direction for use:

After face cleansing, remove the patch from the film and place the adhesive side to the pimple. After 8-12 hours, remove the patch then proceed to facial cleansing. Change the patch every 8-12 hours.

.

Missha Anti-trouble Patch Set – KRW3500 (8 x 10patches)

This is cheapest among the three. It has very faint odour that not easily detectable. Each sheet contains 6 bigger patches and 4 smaller patches to accommodate different size of acne. Since the first usage, I can fully understand why the product has 80 patches and just sells for 3500won. I got total 18 big and small papules on the forehead, as it turned out one pack was only enough for few days use. Big papules normally became worse on next day but turned out to be dry and flat from the 3rd day onwards (after pop the pimple), and then they heal on their own. Not bad, at least the papules did go away (or they supposed to vanish on their own).

The Face Shop Anti-trouble Blemish Patch – KRW4400 (1 x 24patches)

Nevertheless, the new papules kept blooming after old one were gone, so I continued the test with The Face Shop treatment. The patches come in 3 different sizes and I could detect a strong tea tree oil smell upon opening the package seal. The patch texture is also thicker and more cushion-y than the other two. I actually liked this one most, it has shown better healing effect among the three but still not being consistent on the healing effect. One thing to note is, always remember to remove all these patches before facial cleansing, I often forget their existence as they felt like air on skin.

The Face Shop Spot Clear Intensive Patch – KRW1000 (1 x 10patches)

This smelt bitter, very bitter, I didn’t notice the tea tree oil odour although the product label stated tea tree oil is one of its ingredient. Although no impressive healing result of this Spot Clear Intensive Patch shown but judging from the review pictures of those Korean reviewers, it may work for other. For me, most of the time it didn’t help much, I can do without it.

Anti-trouble spot patch seems to be common in Korean cosmetics, brands like Missha, The Face Shop, Skin Food, Innisfree…etc all are selling this type of aid. Probably I was used them incorrectly because I read spot patch was originally created for scar healing after mole-removing laser (not sure if this true). Thinking in this way, I do think these spot patches helped the scar appearance especially for pustules, at least I don’t see acne pit left behind after the major breakout. As a conclusion, I would say this type of aid might not be effective to treat the acne but they are really good to prevent itchy fingers to play with the acne and helping the scar healing.

Hello a spanking new year… May there be joy and peace to all of you in 2012 (^ᴗ  ^) ~*. Today I want to share an absolutely amazing discovery although it is actually not something new. I have used an Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) in 2010 but reluctant to re-purchase because I prefer to indulge myself with aromatherapy rather than coconut smell.

.

.

In recent years, my sensitive skin becomes easily react to what I eat that I have more flare-up than ever. The L’Occitane shea butter balm is good to relieve the itchiness but not doing much in rash healing, moreover the heavy balm is not practical to be used for large area of body skin, it is also expensive to be used as body balm every day. Thanks to Lydia comment, I read back my old post and inspired myself  to try coconut oil again, despite I really really not fond of coconut smell.

.

Thoughtful packaging. I use pump at home but replace with cap if I take it travelling. Allow some buffer space inside the bottle before thrust the pump so the oil will not overflow.

.

My prayer is answered, I saw this cold pressed, organic, 100% pure EVCO in a supermarket the week after I replied Lydia comment in my old EVCO review, best of all it costs THB270/250ml only. The brand has four package sizes (60ml, 120ml, 250ml and 500ml) of their EVCO and 250ml is the largest size sold at the supermarket. Since I knew EVCO is helpful for sensitive skin so I bought the 250ml without hesitant.

.

.

Although the freezing point of Coconut oil is 25.1 °C due to its high level of saturated fat, but I never found my EVCO becomes solid under room temperature even the temperature of certain days were as low as 21°C  in dry season. Anyhow, using pure EVCO in cold season is probably inconvenient. If I shop at the supermarket in early morning, I can see all these coconut oils are in solid form on shelves but return to liquid form gradually when the temperature is up.

.

.

Cold pressed, is an extraction method without heat processing method, which normally a more tedious extraction method and ideal to preserve the greatest nutrient. It has very mild aroma and the detectable smell is only lingering for few minutes. I think it smells much pleasant than my previous EVCO purchase, probably it is quite newly manufactured (2 weeks!) at time of purchase.

.

.

The oil is feeling very rich and runny on skin. It leaves greasy film and takes long time to be absorbed by skin, hence I mixed the oil with body butter in the beginning to reduce the greasy feel and also to increase the moisture level of the body moisturizer in very humid season. Nevertheless, when my skin is quite drying in air-conditioned room, this is easier to be absorbed. Additionally, using the EVCO alone is still insufficient to very dry skin in low humidity which would require extra body moisturizer on top of this for adequate moisture.

.

.

After using this EVCO for nearly two months, I was no longer bothering about the greasiness and smell, instead I was using it every night religiously and will continue to re-purchase until coconut trees go extinct. What have changed my mind so dramatically? …. (T T) All because it resolved my ingrown hair ~ !!

.

I have small area of ingrown hair on both legs caused by body exfoliation at a local spa and Veet waxing cream (eventhough the one I used was sensitive skin formula) made them worse. I felt inferior to reveal the skin especially I never had issue with ingrown hair in my first 30+ years! Unfortunately the ingrown hair did not disappear by itself and some remedy like exfoliation, plant oils, shea butter also unable to improve the condition. When I prepared to live with ingrown hair in next 30 years, a “miracle” happened. Approximate 90% of my ingrown hair is gone after solely applying EVCO oil to the affected area for 2-3 weeks… totally surprise! I should try this way earlier.

.

.

In short, this is a simple budget oil that worked miracle for my sensitive skin. It can be used for cooking too but I do not feel ease as it looks a little bit too fancy in kitchen, after all we have better oil for cooking. All in all, love EVCO.

.

Rating: …)))     Excellent. Willing to buy again.
