Beautyknot ~ My Skin Care Diary

Archive for October 2011

The History of Whoo or simply Whoo (后,meaning empress), is top niche cosmetics brand by LG Korea. Although Sulwhasoo is being the “No.1” in Korea but Whoo has gained her big pie among Korea cosmetics market too. I have this 40ml deluxe sample size as part of my gift set purchase, it retails for KRW38000/160ml in Korea. I think this is a good size for traveling, so I mostly reserved it for trip and stick with my gentle Japanese cleansers for daily care.

.

.

I thought this is going to be another high-end soap-based cleanser similar to Kose Sekkisei Supreme and Shiseido White Lucent, which normally foam up every well and could be drying for easily dehydrated skin. Apparently, they are alike. In reality, they are not quite alike.

.

.

Here is what I found them alike. First, they all are brightening/whitening cleanser. Secondly, they all have strong floral scent. Third, they all give refreshing, squeaky skin after wash which sometimes could be drying to non-oily skin. Last, they all have rich and creamy texture. As shown in above picture, the content of this Whoo cleansing foam quickly melted by my body heat, therefore I could only take picture of the melted form – more cream alike.

.

.

From the sense of texture I supposed it should be lathering generously, however it didn’t lather much as you’ve seen in the above picture. Since I don’t have its English ingredient list so I won’t be able to know what surfactant used in its formula but my experience with various cleansers just told me that it can actually foam up very well, hence I performed a test and it proved itself that can really foam up very well! It just needs a tool to assist the foaming.

.

Taking a small amount on a foaming ball, then adding a little bit of water and squeezing the ball……

Rich, dense, resilience!

.

That may be a good idea having a foaming ball/net/sponge in the bathroom but normally I lack of this 1-minute diligence, in fact I’m actually fine without the rich foam. With or without rich foam, this brightening cleansing foam felt creamy on skin.

Between Whoo Seol, Kose Sekkisei Supreme and Shiseido White Lucent cleansers, I have mentioned they are not quite alike. I found Whoo Seol’s cleanser seemed to have milder cleansing power. After checking back my simple cleansing test of Kose’s and Shiseido’s, notably Whoo’s Seol Brightening Cleansing Foam didn’t cleanse the same lipstick as well as Kose’s and Shiseido’s did.

As a whole, I would say this is pleasant to use because I like foaming cleanser and its texture. Among the three cleansers I commented in this post, I might be choosing this Whoo cleanser over the other two because of its milder cleansing power, despite I liked the scent of Shiseido White Lucent most. Nevertheless I’m also picky and wouldn’t consider purchasing without knowing its full ingredient list, after all I really think all I need for normal cleansing is a mild (and foaming) cleanser and I do see the difference in long run – less sensitive skin.

I tried to choose natural skin care carefully because for sensitive skin, some plant extracts were seriously skin irritant, such as bergamot and peppermint. Although not all Caudalie products suit my skin but I tend to try more product from a brand which I had pleasant experience with them. Perhaps, I should mention I have special fondness for grape ingredient in skin care. (“v)

.

This is a small sample given as part of my purchase in Sasa cosmetics store many months ago. The 3ml sample is enough for approximately a week usage as I didn’t use too much for each application.  Therefore, this review will be brief and not a comprehensive one.

The consistency is fluffy light and easily absorbed into skin, leaving a smooth touch. The fragrance is strong but smelt fresh, as Caudalie always did. It is not the citrusy sort of scent by the way.

Having combination skin in summer time, it kept my skin balanced and moisturized nicely in humid tropical climate, for 26~30oC, both under room temperature and mild air-conditioned temperature. My oily T-zone appeared less oily and my normal U-zone was moisturized adequately. I had also tried this for my irritated skin, which resulted from using a high concentration pure Vitamin C treatment, it was helpful to calm the tingling skin too.

.

As a whole, I think this is a light moisturizer that pleasant to use, although it seemed to be too light for very dry skin. If not the high perfume in the ingredient list, this is an anti-oxidant moisturizer I might consider when I run out of idea what to put on my face in next summer.

Let me introduce my seven adorable fruit princesses from far far away…… love them all at the first sight and can’t help to adopt them all!

.

.

What TonyMoly said about this lip gloss ~ soft jelly polymer based, it applies smoothly to your lips without leaving sticky residue behind. It adds moisture to your lips and makes them look fuller.

.

.

In this post I’m going to review the #1 Scowling face strawberry princess only because I want to send the rest to my coming Giveaway! (“D) Hint Hint…nxt mth

.

Among the range, only #2 and #7 are shimmery.

.

I must say the lip gloss really lives up to its description. The gloss easily smoothed on lips, no sticky residue, scentless and very pigmented. It imparts dewy shine and feels very moisturizing on the lips too. As shown in below testing pictures, I just applied a single layer of the lip gloss and it gave me a nice touch-up.

.

.

The lip gloss is also quite long-lasting. After some drinking and having some snack/a meal, the shine wears off but the pigmentation is still visible. Comparing to the rest of lip glosses I have used, I love how this fruit princess gloss glides on lip flawlessly but considering the shade, high-end lip gloss obviously is a winner for me. For instance, fruit princess gloss #1 gives single colour tone – pinkish (Perhaps this is just what it meant for), where high-end Shiseido Maquillage Rouge Enamel Glamour gives dynamic variant according to different lighting. I think price does matter.

.

.

Nonetheless, I bet this fruit princess gloss is immensely eye-catching (“v). Haha, I just feel like to knock her head when I saw my strawberry princess’s scowling face. Hey my dear, What is in your mind? Why my little princess is unhappy? The face remembered me of naïve childhood too, I still don’t understand why I always had the grouchy face in picture when I was a small kid. (“b)

.

The green calyx of the strawberry (all other fruit princess) is rubber-made, thus soft.

.

Now I can see a reason why my little princess is unhappy…

.

Or when I twist her neck long,  heheh  (Happy Halloween btw)

.

TonyMoly Fruit Princess Gloss is retailing ₩6800/7ml in Korea, inexpensive and lovely, suitable for those who don’t like glittering lip gloss. Anyway I would like to keep this miniature (only 5cm tall) display on table either I’m no longer using it or after finished using it. Sorry, can’t help but again, so cute!

I am hesitant should I post this review because I believe many of you never heard of this brand. Korea has so many cosmetics brands and too many BB creams flooding the market. The hit of BB cream is still going go that lately we saw some international brands have followed the trend with their very first BB cream.

I post this review anyway, so next time other people can get a little bit of info about it if they are interested. This is also another purchase of my sister in Korea. Neither we nor Korean couldn’t find any information about this BB cream online, haha. However it is cosmetics by Korea Samsung Fire, the largest non-life insurance company in Korea, therefore I do have certain degree of confidence of using this BB cream. My sister bought this for KRW30,000/40ml, expensive for BB cream especially it is not a popular brand.

It has beige tone as you seen in this picture

(Left) Bare   (Right) with Le ciel BB cream

The BB cream felt lightweight and smooth touching on skin. Skin looked translucent in natural sunlight but looked rather pale or yellow toned in fluorescent light. That said, it didn’t provide the very high coverage to change/camouflage your skin tone but it created more natural sheer finish. Others commented I looked no foundation makeup on when I actually wore this BB cream. Overall the skin texture still appeared slightly smoother, less redness but freckles are still fairly visible.

…∞∞ Testing ∞∞…

(Left) with Le ciel BB cream on

(Right) Bare skin, just after went through 14-day-no-skin-care experiment, thus please excuse the skin has many blackheads.

The ingredient list is in Korean

As this BB cream belongs to my sister hence I only used it for a week. I didn’t have breakout or sense any irritation from using it. Overall it didn’t impress me and my sister, we expect good coverage from BB cream.

.

First of all, let me clarify that this Sulwhasoo Liquid Cleansing Foam was belonging to my sister, I was only given approval to use it for a week. (“b) For those who are not familiar with Sulwhasoo, it is premium Korean herbal medicinal skincare that using quality Korean ginseng as main ingredient.

 .

.

There is a small story behind this cleansing foam. One day, a friend of my sister, who also a sales representative tried to sell her a direct-selling skin care series. The friend also brought litmus paper as she wanted to perform a pH test to show to my sister. First, she tested on a normal drugstore facial cleanser, see, the litmus paper turned purple, it was too alkaline, not good for skin. Then she tested on her direct-selling facial cleanser… okay… the litmus paper turned orange, so it was acidic but was still better than the alkaline one. When my sister told her that she was using a very good brand from Korea, the friend also tested the litmus paper on this Sulwhasoo Liquid Cleansing Foam, the litmus paper turned green………… err… so for facial cleanser, this was the best, the friend admitted helplessly. Well, her original intention was to sell a neutral pH cleanser, too bad the outcome didn’t meet her initial expectation. Unexpectedly, the test gives a credit to this Sulwhasoo Liquid Cleansing Foam.

 .

.

In fact, my sister told me that her heart was aching when she saw her friend took 2~3 pumps of this Sulwhasoo cleanser for testing because she usually only used ½ ~1 pump for each cleansing! Yes, ½ pump was actually enough for lathering as shown in below picture.

 .

.

It has clear liquid-gel consistency, the herbal scent is not overpowering but it smelt rather like herbal ointment for me. As it foams up easily hence I did not need more, I think the 200ml has no problem to last for 2-3 months. The thing is, although it tested to have neutral pH, I found it dried my combination skin slightly after the refreshing wash. However, we are staying in a high-rise condominium and my skin could be slightly drier than in “lower ground” due to windy air, in reality I actually had more oilier skin during hot & humid weather in August in tropical country.

 .

.

It has medium cleansing power as shown in following simple test. The shimmering lipstick faded a lot after 15 seconds massaged the foam on skin. The main cleansing agents (surfactants) used for this cleanser are Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate, PEG-200 Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate, Disodium Cocoaphodiacetate and Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate. Though I don’t fully understand attributes of these surfactants but generally they are classified as gentle surfactants. There is other surfactants listed on the bottom of the ingredient list that didn’t bother me much.

 .

.

My sister paid USD22/200ml for this cleanser in a Korea duty free shop or the normal retail price is KWR30,000 in Korea. In fact, I was very surprised she splurged on Sulwhasoo particularly she never spent a lot on skin care in history, seemed like the fame of Sulwhasoo in Korea did affect her. Nonetheless, she liked this Sulwhasoo cleanser even more after the pH test. (“v)

With 15% high concentrated pure Vitamin C, I actually had no much doubt whether it helped brightening or not, instead, I rather interested in how much it helped to brighten and wondering how much my sensitive skin can tolerate the low pH.

According to Neogence Taiwan, this ampoule has 4 selling points. 1) 15% Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) powder which sourced from Holland DSM Nutritional  2) Special designed ampoule packaging 3) BioBenefity®with Cynara Scolymus for dark spot treatment 4) Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate) to enhance skin moisture and ingredients penetration.

The Vitamin C powder and the essence are stored separately and will only be mixed together after you press the pump tightly on the very first application, the Vitamin C powder then slowly dissolved in the watery essence. Most Vitamin C ampoule I’ve seen adopt this kind of packaging, it probably the best way to prolong the potency of Vitamin C to date.

Direction:

Apply 1-2 drops of the ampoules onto perfectly toning face, gently smooth over face and neck. Use 2 days and rest 1 day, then keep using 3 days and rest 1 day again in a week. Suitable for day and night use. For best result, please use with UV protection and hydrating product in daily care. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.

(Left) New and unopened, (Right) Mixing the powder and essence

(Left) New and unopened, (Right) After the powder fully dissolved in the essence

When I bought the ampoules, the Vitamin C powder (as pointed by orange arrow in the below picture) already appeared pale yellowish, it turned darker shade unevenly after some time despite the packaging remaining sealed. I only exposed the ampoules to sunlight few minutes during photo shooting and always stored the ampoules (unopened) in bathroom closet until I realized the steam of warm shower could affect the stability of Vitamin C as it was very sensitive to surrounding temperature. The best storage is refrigerator that my second bottle of ampoule kept its colour after few months in refrigerator.

The essence has no noticeable scent and it is feeling watery that easily absorbed in skin. For blog picture sake, I tested the very first pump of the ampoule on the back of my hand, the thin and dry skin of my hand felt slightly stingy and quite uncomfortable but no immediate irritation had been noticed when applied the essence to facial skin. That was exactly the same experience as Neogence C+ whitening serum. It stung the erupted-pimple too, but tolerable.

However, my sensitive skin started getting irritating after using the ampoule after a week. I used 2 pumps for each application (face & neck), day and night, particularly focused on the pigmented spots. I also followed the product direction : use 3 days >> rest 1 day >> use 2 days >> rest 1 day. The brightening effect was appreciable but my sensitive skin becoming redness-prone and feeling a little bit uncomfortable at the end of the first week. When I began using it on second week (as well as third week and forth week), it stung my skin instantly. The second bottle stung my skin also despite my skin had rest about 3 weeks before I used it again. For your info, I had toned my skin with Neogence HA Lotion but the stinging sensation was still very irritating, fortunately a HA essence or moisturizer was able to ease the irritation quickly. Besides, it didn’t work for acne scar too. From my past experience with pure Vitamin C and retinol, I found retinol is much effective to lighten acne scar.

On the positive side, my freckles were visibly lightened to certain extent in few days! Besides, I certainly noticed my bare skin seemed more glowing. Do mind, the brightening effect was temporary, that said the pigmentation would become darker again after unprotected sun exposure. Additionally, the brightening result reached its peak after using it a while.

Frankly said, I felt uncomfortable with the yellowish of the Vitamin C powder although Neogence said it has 90% activeness on brightening even the colour became slight yellowish and has approximately 40% activeness when the pure vitamin C became brown colour. Because it stung my facial skin, I actually used it generously on body, I think it did help to lighten the body skin a little bit.

In summary, this certainly not a treatment for daily maintenance, it should be treated like periodical treatment for healthy “thick” skin. While I always thought higher concentration gives stronger and better result, I realized high concentration might be another culprit for developing skin sensitivity. This Neogence C+ Essence Ampoules is the highest concentration of pure Vitamin C essence that I had ever tried but I didn’t get the best result. Most likely, 10% pure Vitamin C delivered “fast” brightening result as good as 15% concentration one. I purchased this ampoule from Sasa Malaysia for RM145/8ml x2, a price to get a lesson. Rated it satisfied because it worked after all, not suitable for sensitive skin tough.

Rating : …. )))       Satisfied. Will not buy again.

Continued from Part III…………

Arriving in metropolitan Munich, I could definitely smell the festive mood of Oktoberfest (The beer festival). The festival is held on an area named Theresienwiese (U-bahn, U4), which is located near Munich’s main train station, Hauptbahnhof. This site has all the info you need to be fun in Oktoberfest. I am non-drinker but the beer tent also serves mineral water (carbonated water) and juice, remember the festival is for all, not just for drinker. (“v)

.

We were at Marienplatz, the central Square, also a popular shopping district. A nice sunny day, aroung 15°C in the evening.

The popular Rathaus, we were catching the 5pm Clockenspiel.

From Marienplatz we took U-bahn transited at Karlplatz then got to Theresienwiese. Nice to see many Bavarians in their traditional costume. We bought the multiple-trip ticket €5.40, valid inside white zone and until 6am of next day. The Oktoberfest just next to the exit.

These are those bigger, well-decorated beer tents

As you can see, the place was crowded. In fact, by the time we reached there, we can still enter most of the tents but sorry, no empty seat! It was even a low-traffic Wednesday. If you come at late evening, you cannot even enter the tents because they are closed due to overfilling. Nevertheless, that was still a joy to see Bavarians were celebrating, singing, dancing and beering!

When we wanted to return to train station, we just followed the crowd without any idea which station they were heading to. It was roughly 20 minutes walk, ah, we were going to different train station.

A surprise we saw a beautiful sunset over the bridge

It is Heimeranplatz station. The train station just near by the bridge.

We went to Olympia-Einkaufszentrum near to our hotel. All shops and department store in the shopping mall were closed on 8pm. We came back on next day for some grocery shopping before departure.

Had our dinner in a nice Italian restaurant

The view from my hotel room, did not go to the Olympia park eventhough it was closed to our hotel, fatigue and busy.
