Beautyknot ~ My Skin Care Diary

Archive for June 2011

I am so glad I finally finished using this.

Laser Perfect Pore-Less is new release of Rojukiss Pore-Less series. There are three formulations for different types of pore issues, which differed by the metallic colour of the packaging. The silver for oily acne skin, Titanium for men oily acne skin and gold for aging pore. In fact, their ingredient lists are more or less similar, the distinctive ingredient difference between aging with oily acne skin version is Aging version contains Beta-Glucan in first three ingredient.

My review is based on Gold version for continuous/aging large pores.

Having a good ingredient list, I thought it worth a try since it is less expensive than Rojukiss Protox serum. Unfortunately, I really disliked the strong old-fashioned fragrance, definitely not my flavour.

The serum has gel-like consistency and required few minutes (depend on the skin condition and air humidity) for the sticky gel film settled properly on skin, non-sticky and no greasy looking once the serum had been absorbed fully. The serum has chubby sturdy glass packaging  with a dropper. Take only small droplet for an application because the moisturizing gel consistency would be easily smoothed over the skin, in addition, it needs more time to be absorbed by skin if applying too much and is probably pore clogging (!!) for non-dehydrated skin.

Since my skin was quite combination-normal in past several months, this felt very moisturizing and I used it as moisturizer too. For my aging pores, I have not seen any improvement with my bare eyes after using every morning for nearly 3 months, probably it should be treated for prevention of wide spread aging pores. However, I think Hyaluronic acid essence “tighten up” my aging pores much successful than this.

As a conclusion, this is not something I loved to put on my face everyday, both its scent and consistency. I prefer something lightweight in humid climate. Nevertheless, this never irritated my sensitive skin, thus I think it is gentle and fine to use.

Note: I got Rojukiss Protox Day Cream SPF50+++ as free gift with this purchase, hence I also put an update on the day cream review.

Rating: …)))     Satisfied. Unlikely to buy again.

I was surprised by the dirt-cheap price of these Lovemore anti-aging masks at Watsons pharmacy in Singapore. Affordable price S$8.90 to 9.90 per 5 sheets, impressive ingredients list, and manufacturing date is within 3 months at the time of purchase… I just couldn’t give myself a reason why I shouldn’t get one. In addition, Watsons was having promotion during the time, hence I actually bought them at slightly cheaper price.

Isn’t the envelope-design packaging very lovely? A Love letter shipping directly from other part of world to make you beautiful and younger! (‘`D)

Both Japan Pearls Firming & Whitening and Australia Agar-agar Lifting masks are retailing for S$8.90/ 5x25ml, where 3D-design Japan Electric Ore Peptide Firming Duo Lifting Mask costs slightly more for S$9.90/ 5x30ml. On each packaging, there is a rating of various effects that you can expect from the mask. I won’t say the self-rating is accurate nor I think my experience with the masks can overwrite the rating because individual skin condition can vary from climate, biological genetics, age group and lifestyle.

About the masks:

☺  Mildly scented

☺ The mask essences have slick and gel consistency

☺ The mask sheet design is a little bit wider than usual size but the wet sheet did adhere to skin nicely

☺ Both masks deliver similarly, imparting more glowing and satisfied moist skin right after application, no obvious “whitening” and “Lifting” effects.

☻ Although the mask residue can dry a sheer film on skin in short while but it still felt rather rich for my combination skin in very humid day

☻ I can imagine it might cause me breakout if using daily

☻ If leaving the mask residue on skin for overnight, you can feel the “gel film” when rinse your skin with water in morning

The 3D mask sheet is stretchable so we just hook the holes on ear at each side.

Rave the 3D mask sheet design of Japan Electric Ore Peptide Firming Duo Lifting Mask! The design really makes difference, it gives more anti-gravity effect compared to the other two, which is why I loved this most amid the three. The stretching mask sheet simply placed the skin in right position by ignoring earth gravity! Regardless the anti-aging result was not instant, the mask design certainly makes you feel the instant “lifting“ and “firming” effects.

Revamped new releases

Overall I am not impressed with Japan Pearls Firming & Whitening and Australia Agar-agar Lifting masks but I do think Japan Electric Ore Peptide Firming Duo Lifting Mask has very good value as anti-aging mask. As such, I rate “Excellent” for Japan Electric Ore Peptide Firming Duo Lifting Mask and “So-so” for the other two, cute packaging doesn’t earn customer loyalty if the product cannot perform greatly. May be that is part of the reason the 2D version had been upgraded recently and re-launched with new packing (as shown in above picture).

This is not a new product but it has been raved by many skincare lovers as well as many beauty magazines for soft and moist skin in an overnight. Being one of the best-sellers in Japan, although I think Neogence Hyaluronic Acid Essence has better ingredient than this (also costs slightly more) but I was very curious how this compared to my favorite Neogence essence. It sold for THB860/30ml previously (if I remember correctly), then recently Watson pharmacy brought in the sample size of the new-packaged JUJU Aquamoist HA Essence. THB119/10ml for the sample, this is good opportunity to try it out!

According to JUJU Aquamoist, it enriched with pure Bio-Hyaluronic Acid, a droplet is enough to deeply moisturize skin. It contains no animal ingredient, ideally to use at night so you can be greeted by supple skin for fresh makeup in next morning.

sample size

This essence has almost identical gelatinous consistency with Neogence Hyaluronic Acid Essence, it felt very slippery while spreading, seemed to take forever to absorb in skin yet it only takes few minutes in reality. Lightly massage with fingers for about 30 seconds, then let it absorbs in skin by itself. Skin would be slight sticky touching before it dried up, then skin turned to be smooth, dewy and bouncy soft once the essence had been completely set in skin!

With this, my skin just remained soft, moisture and more balanced. This essence plumped up the mild expression lines on my forehead, but worked less for dynamic expression lines under eyes.  In hot & humid climate, I applied this essence  as night moisturizer and I woke up next morning with supple skin but shiny (oily T-zone) face. In fact, the gel film still remained on skin until you rinsed it off  during face wash.

Nevertheless, a product can work wonder or lousy in different climate. This Juju Aquamoist HA essence was totally useless in rather low humidity spring in Europe. My dry skin sipped in the HA essence quickly but the skin was urged for hydration again and felt uncomfortably tight after few minutes. A nourishing face oil for dry skin worked thousand times better in this case.  I also used this under makeup.  The dried gel film (of Juju Aquamoist HA essence) on skin started coming up in small flakes when I applied BB cream afterwards, somehow it did not pilled if I used it together with oil or cream. I guess the BB cream texture was not very runny as oil and cream, thus the heavier finger pressure for BB cream application possibly be part of the reason of the flake up.

In conclusion, I am not totally convinced by JUJU Aquamoist Hyaluronic Acid Essence and thinking Neogence is much superior than it , though I have not tried Neogence in dry climate. Anyhow, I am glad to test it in dry climate and learnt that a very hydrating HA is not all-rounded in all circumstances.

Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben.

I “borrowed” this cleanser from my younger sister, hence I only used this several times and my review here would be brief one. Generally cleanser does not require intensive test because the cleansing power could be seen clearly and it eventually would be rinsed off from skin within a minute. That is why I decided to make a quick review of this cleanser.

Neutrogena Pure Mild Facial Cleanser has gel consistency, tinted and it has not-so-pleasant plastic chemical smell for me. Only a pump needed for generating lathers and it foamed up fast. Skin felt squeaky clean, feeling refreshing after washing in hot and humid climate. My sister and I both have sensitive skin, and this cleanser did not irritate our skin apparently.

You might need to take note it contains SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) that some of you wanted to avoid eventhough SLES is known less irritating than SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). While the cosmetics company tells you their product is fragrance-free and it is mild for all skin types, they just did not tell you the product contains other irritating ingredients. You will gain the fact by checking the ingredient list although that requires a little bit common knowledge of skin care ingredient.

(Top) Shimmering lipstick

(Bottom) Cleansed the makeup as if washing face for 10 seconds

As you can see from my testing picture, it has very good cleansing power. Although the shimmering lipstick was not completely removed but I think at least 95% was done. This retails for THB190/150ml in Thailand in major supermarket and pharmacy. Howver, my sister and I are not going to re-purchase/purchase this since she is into Korea skin care recently and I got my own favorite cleansers with much better ingredients.

Statute of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

That was a gloomy and drizzling day but we were cheered by the news of the Icelandic volcano had stopped releasing ash in past two days, so I was in the very good mood to explore and shop.

On the way to Bag & Purse Museum, I spotted this gallery. It was closed at that time but if you are cat lover like me, do check out the cats gallery.

Among all the world renowned and small museum in Amsterdam, I only visited very few of them. It was interesting to learn the history of Bags & Purses in Europe, despite this was a small and nice museum, we found the staff seriously lack of VAT refund knowledge. We bought souvenirs there more than €80 in single receipt but the staff seemed to be totally clueless about Tax Refund Cheque when we asked for it, and she ignored us at the end of product wrapping. What was the point to place a Global Blue Tax Refund Logo on the cashier counter?? This was the only flaw we got from this museum, unfortunately.

Bloemenmarkt (Singel Flower market), we didn’t shop any plant here because of the tropical climate and custom issues. However, we had a nice experience of knowing various type of flower bulbs.

Self-service please

Flower bulbs also sold in can form

or in form of ready-to-display

Small souvenirs were selling €0.50-€0.80 cheaper than other places like that we had visited.

A traditional cheese blender/grinder in a cheese shop at the flower market. You can test various Holland cheeses in different tastes before purchase.

Skins Cosmetics at Runstraat. Excellent service and bought my REN product here. They mainly sell imported brands like Aesop, Eve Lom, Dr.Sebagh…etc, overpriced but is the only place you can buy them in Holland.

A boutique in Runstraat. I liked this handsome cat, it looked up and down, right and left, but never look at me. Cool… or shy.

Pieter Cornelisz P.C. Hooftstraat. An upscale shopping street for luxury designer brands. Among them, the most popular store probably none other than Louis Vuitton, which had most customers during the afternoon.

Rijksmuseum museum at Museum-Plein , the “I amsterdam” sign is just in front of the museum. The world renowned Van Gogh museum also close by.

Diamond museum is next to Coster Diamond. It was about to close by the time we were there, so we didn’t manage to make a visit. However we did learn some diamond knowledge in Coster Diamond.

Vondelpark close to Museum-plein, the most famous park in Amsterdam.

We took a tram back to Dam square at Leidseplein as we were both exhausted and missed Asian food. We were attracted by Dim Sum Court at Zeedijk street, saying that eat as much as you like in an hour for €8.50 and honestly, we were quite regretted afterwards. I remembered I had read good reviews of this self-service restaurant on internet but seemed the reviews were very outdated. There were only less than 10 selections including a gravy, fried rice, noodles, french fries,  prawn cracker, five dim sums choices, curry, chicken and beef. Sorry to say the quality of food was the worst I had tried in my life as per Asian standard, though the dim sum was still acceptable.  This restaurant is only for those who only wanted to feed their stomach and didn’t ask for quality.

We went to Albert Cuypmarkt (flea market) the next day morning. Instead of walking and discover the shop along the way liked the day before, we took tram16 (€2.60/adult) directly from Dam Square to Albert Cuyp, the tram stopped in front of the flea market.

Good bargain of woman stuff here. I was amazed when I saw a booth selling handbags which have similar design with Hermes Kelly and Birkin bags. I won’t say they were replica because there was no Hermes logo print on the bag, I just passed by and didn’t give them a second look. I will tell you a story at the end of this post.

We had our lunch at Dam Square before going to airport. The New King Chinese restaurant at Zeedijk street (few next to the Dim Sum court and in front of the Chinese temple), it was relatively nice and people got to queue during meal hour. The prawn wantan was delicious but the rest were way too oily for my liking, by the way the white rice was served free if you order dishes. I always like Sze-Chuan soup (Chinese Hot & sour soup) but the Peking Sze-Chuan soup was less tasty in my opinion because it used duck meat instead of seafood.

Lastly, as promised as above, I wanted to share with you a true story happened in a developing country.

”   A couple I know is doing well in their business and living affluently in a semi-detached house in a city. They have a study room that the working desk is facing to window with back yard view. One morning, they found their valuable belonging on the desk was stolen such as the husband very expensive Rolex’s watch and the wife’s beloved LV wallet. Oh! They must have forgot to close their window at night. They quickly called the police and together they went to the back yard for examination. Wow! The wife was so happy that she found her empty LV wallet on the ground… who care the stolen cash when the genuine LV wallet itself was far more costly …… all thanks to the rampant replica bags in the country.  “

End with a sigh

Amsterdam Centraal Train Station

░   Useful link  ░

I basically just rest, play and shop the first three days in Amsterdam. Besides I caught a little bit cold because not brought my wind jacket for occasional chilly wind and my SO had his corporate event in Amsterdam, hence I only stayed and moved around in the city centre for these days. Nothing fancy, just lived according to local pace.

Popular Dam Square, it was 10-15 minutes walk from Central train station or you could take a tram. You could find a lot of tourist-oriented shop/service, restaurant, coffee shop and shopping malls here. The next building in the picture is NL upmarket department store – De Bijenkorf (LV, Hermes and Burberry also situated here).

The Royal Palace in the centre picture, it was still under renovation at that time. The 5-story Swedish H&M flagship fashion store was located in the former ABN-AMRO building.

There were many tourist attractions in this area, some have very good deal. We bought a discounted ticket of Madame Tussauds at €16/adult (entry after 3pm) and the best was we need not to queue for entry at Madame Tussaud’s wax museum.

Inside Madame Tussauds wax museum.

(Left) Briefing from a giant figure  (Right) Some old times displays

then proceed to a scary journey…

Did you recognize them?

Long missed Chinese noodles… though not exactly authentic. Here you can see a lot of Chinese restaurants at almost every corner. Few Asian restaurants like Thai, Malaysia and Indonesia were also can be found near by the Dam Square.

I guess this is the Chinatown? The only street sign in Chinese I had seen in Holland…

Occasionally we would pass by the famous Red Light District few times a day to our destination, a  place with legalized window sex shopping, pubs and night life.

Mounted polices were patrolling in the area.

Strolling around the beautiful canals was part of my daily routine…

One kind of the boat houses.

The Oude Kerk (Old Church) located in the centre of Red Light District.

Survey the Amsterdam city map in the hotel.

Part of my haul in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

– Have a nice day –

I stayed in Hilton Rotterdam and Radisson Blu Amsterdam during my trip to Netherlands. Generally I was more pleased with Hilton Rotterdam eventhough it gained so-so review in Tripadvisor and in fact Radisson Blu got high rating overall. Perhaps our reviews were varied by different factors and personal preference.

── ∞   Hilton Rotterdam   ∞ ──

I booked the room through and I must say I was very intrigued by what was the “Top Secret Hotel” in the hotel search refined list because the “secret hotel” offered very attractive low price for a 4-star hotel in strategic location. The only disadvantage of booking “Top Secret Hotel” was you only know the hotel name after you made the payment. I did a search and of “Top Secret Hotel” online and guess it might be Hilton since the provided hotel info was very alike Hilton’s, and I recalled Hilton was also partner of Amazing Race reality game show. Obviously I was right after the hotel name had been revealed in the end. Haha… I was so proud of getting a great deal in Rotterdam, the price was cheaper than special promotion of Hilton but breakfast was not included. Why bother the breakfast when you can get abundant great choice around the train station?

Liked the Hilton Rotterdam ….(during the 4 nights)

+ only 10-15 minutes walk from/to Rotterdam central train station

+ The nearest metro station is Beurs

+ Strategic location. Very near to Zuidplein shopping district with many popular retail chains (I bought Zara, Mango and H&M stuff here) , restaurants (Indian, Italian, Indonesian, Chinese… and fast food),  De Bijenkorf department store and Albert Heijn supermarket.

+ Holland casino is next to the hotel and Luxor theater just at the back of the hotel

+ Spacious and clean room with city view

+ Fast and prompt service upon request

+ Friendly staff (mostly staffs by the way)

+ Crabtree & Evelyn hair and skin care kit, which has strong frangrance but please to use. The body lotion wasn’t moisture enough for dry skin.

Some may not like it …

–  no bell boy helping you carry luggage

–  no free Wi-Fi service

–  boring room interior design

── ∞   Radisson Blu Amsterdam  ∞ ──

Radisson Blu Amsterdam is 4-star hotel and ideally located at Rusland with only 5 minutes walk to Dam Square. The surrounding environment of the hotel was quiet and nice, with old buildings and canals.  Compared to Rotterdam, the food price around Dam Square was more expensive but also more variety on the other hand. The hotel has two building blocks which opposite to each other, we were stayed in the main block (left in below picture).

Liked the Radisson Blu ….(during the 4 nights)

+ 10-15 minutes walk to/from Amsterdam central train station

+  Very convenient location. You can reach many main tourist attractions by foot, by bicycle, by tram and by boat.

+  Clean and comfortable room

+  Fast service upon request

+  Very nice of the floor heating in bathroom

+  24-hour free Hi-speed internet/Wi-Fi

+  Excellent food quality at the breakfast buffet (though everyday same menu)

+  Hot chocolate drink (also de-caffeined coffee) provided additionally instead of plain coffee and tea.

+  The Anne Semonin hair and skin care kit smelt good but way too light for my skin in Spring weather.

Some may not like it …

–  Different staffs were making small mistakes few times for one request

–  The twin room was slightly narrow and sunlight was shaded by next building

–  Room heating wasn’t warm enough

–  The bed was too soft

–  Noise and sound from outside/above my room everyday. I guess the noise was from housekeeping when they made up the room. In other words, the sound-proof effect of  hotel room was poor.

–  No “Do not disturb” sign in room. I seriously need this since I had been disturbed by housekeeping supervisor? (to check if the room keeping is done)  in afternoon. That was once I was sleeping because of not feeling well, they just simply assumed no body in the room in the afternoon (!!)
