Beautyknot ~ My Skin Care Diary

Archive for December 2009

I had tried the very old-version of Biotherm White D-Tox cleanser many years ago at my best friend’s house, she used everything from Biotherm at that time. I tried to recall the White D-Tox cleanser from my memory…… foamed up very well, contained liberal large-sized exfoliating beads and my skin felt quite drying after wash.

This old formula (THB 1400/125ml) has gritty soft texture and floral fragranced. The grit surprised me that feeling gentle on skin, not really coarse especially I only lightly sweep over skin so I could use it frequently without hurting my sensitive skin.

It does lather up easily, should cleanse well supposedly. The fact was, the lather was not long-lasting and worn off quickly while sweeping over skin. It didn’t remove the dirt effectively, there was no “clean and breathe” feeling since it didn’t remove the oil residue (After blotting my daily grape seed oil massage) completely or even using it directly in morning. I usually cleanse twice for satisfied “clean” result that resulting dryness, otherwise my cotton pad could clearly show the oil residue during toning.

For my below mentioned cleansing test (I particularly test twice for this cleanser), it did not remove the makeup at all until I massage slightly vigorously which I think the cleansing was highly depending on the scrubbing grit. Of course, it never meant for makeup removal but comparing to other facial cleanser, this never convinced me of its efficacy of cleansing power.

 Rinse with water, pat dry…

Talking about brightening, I did see a brighter skin tone occasionally after wash, most probably it removed some dead skin cells with the manual scrubbing, AHA and BHA ingredients, but not really working for the blackhead reduction. For me, it is just a mild-feeling gritty facial foam that does not leave refreshing and squeaky-clean after-wash feeling, additionally, not performing consistently to remove dirt/excessive oil.

I had finished the 20ml sample, finally. That is certainly odd that I usually cleansed twice for the desired cleansing effect. I don’t understand why it doesn’t deliver the nice washing experience as Biotherm Biosource Hydra Mineral cleanser when they seemed to have similar cleansing formula. I hope the coming new version – White D-Tox Bright Cell Instant Brightening Micro-scrub Cleanser will be better.

Clarins Blue Orchid Face treatment oil

Clarins has three types of face treatment oil, Lotus oil (for combination skin prone to oiliness), Santal oil ( for dry or extra-dry skin) and Blue Orchid oil (for dehydrated skin), all contain 100% pure plant extracts.

When I was at Clarins counter of Bangkok airport duty free 6 months ago, I was indecisive between Lotus oil and Blue Orchid oil, in the end I took the sales assistant’s advice.  She recommended this Blue Orchid oil for my easily dehydrated combination skin so that I can use this in both warm and dry seasons. She also assured me this wouldn’t cause blackhead because I couldn’t risk of breaking out.

According to Clarins, the Blue Orchid oil works wonders on thirsty skin, enhancing vitality, radiance and freshness. Softening and nourishing, helps prevent dryness responsible for signs of aging.

Direction: In the evening, after thorough cleansing and toning, apply a small amount to skin which is still dampened with lotion/toner. Avoid the eye contour area. If needed, gently blot face with a soft facial tissue to remove any excess oil.

As Clarins face treatment oils are very concentrated, thus with a drop to achieve maximum effectiveness. Here is the pictures to show you how to get a “drop” of the face treatment oil.

Clarins Blue orchid oil method

Clarins blue orchird content-a "drop"

Although the treatment oil is fluid consistency and nourishing, but it’s not runny on skin and very difficult to spread smoothly onto skin with such a small amount. After toning, what I do is to take few drops (depends on the skin condition) of the treatment oil on palm, warm up and rub the oil in palms, sweeping the skin in lifting motion. This method is also great to relieve water retention in the chin area. The result is instantly firmer and visibly V-shaped jaw line, persistent work on daily basis required keeping the shape. Based on personal experience, facial massage is the best way for skin firming, yet it is free to practice at home.

I also applied this treatment oil prior lotion mask (soaked large cotton pad with lightweight lotion, splitting the cotton pad into few pieces and placed on entire face, gently pat until adsorbed for 3-5 minutes.) for intensive treatment, effective to release skin fatigue. Once in a blue moon, I also take few drops for hair .

Clarins blue orchird - 3 'drops' of the oil

Frankly speaking, my first use with this Blue Orchid oil was actual horrible. I poured a small amount (I thought it’s a small amount) of the oil for entire face and neck, followed with serum and emulsion. The next morning I had terrible red bumps outbreak on my forehead! I was terrified but I always give second chance. On the second time I only took a “drop” of the Blue Orchid oil and avoid oily T-zone, finally it worked really fine on me and I never suffered breakout again in following months eventhough I gradually increased the use amount. I used 3-6 drops in first 2 months, but since I started double cleansing method in morning, my skin moisture improved and I only used 1-3 drops now.

This is the moment I always looking forward in evening, other than relaxing peaceful essential fragrance, it also remarkably imparts glowing skin! The overall complexion looks revitalized. Perhaps my skin care habit and other products play role as well, but I just couldn’t deny the wonderful of this Blue Orchid oil since it’s the only new product introduced into my daily skincare routine at that time. No irritation, redness occurred sometimes for first few minutes, didn’t cause me extra blackhead, overall it is gentle, nourishing and soothing.

The mild serene woody aromatic scent could be strong for first few hours if using more than 5 drops and under fragrance-free moisturizer, which is fine to me anyway. Most of the time I don’t find the scent over powering because I only use tiny amount.

Clarins Blue Orchid Face treatment oil-2

Nevertheless, the Blue Orchid oil neither immediate soothe stinging nor heal my severe flaky nose in 3 days, although It cured the minor flaky nose overnight. Concerning severe nose flake, a good hydrating serum did much better job that healed the flaky in 1.5 days. Therefore, I think comedogenic ingredients such as petrolatum and dimethicone are still very useful for flaky skin recovery.

As a conclusion, I am now a convert of essential face treatment oil. A visibly soft, moist, firmer and glowing skin. Without extra junkie, a simple oil blend is good enough to make a different, not to mention I only paid 1400 baht for 40ml at Bangkok airport duty free and I’ve been using it almost nightly for nearly 7 months now, it should able to last me 8 months! Worth every cent I spent.

Rating: ….)))   Excellent  Excellent. Willing to buy again.

Hanskin Magic BB cream main

Korea BB (Blemish Balm) cream usually comes with several versions, most common versions included basic, glossy, pearly, premium (anti-aging plus whitening) …etc. I received this sample of Hanskin Magic BB Cream as GWP, not sure what the version is, but I believe this is the basic version, whereby the Super Magic BB cream that I reviewed previously is premium version that included whitening, wrinkle care and sun protection.

Hanskin Magic BB cream application method

Since Hanskin is gaining high popularity in Asia, so I’m able to tell a little bit more about it now. All ingredients used for Hanskin BB cream are available locally in Korea, extracted via advanced technology, contains no colorant, no artificial fragrance, no alcohol and no preservatives. I’ve no English ingredient list, however it claims to have Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid, Citrus, Licorice and other plant extracts according to the packaging.

Hanskin Magic BB cream content

Although the shade is quite pale, but it blended into skin naturally by matching my skin tone automatically. Skin looked dewy, even up and brighten up. Basically no coverage to the skin imperfections. Sorry for my pictures couldn’t show the real finish accurately.

before - skin after sunblock

before - skin after sunblock

after- fresh application

after- fresh application

No wonder the common recommended practice is to use BB cream as base, follow by concealer then set by powder. I didn’t aim to have flawless skin, so I never bothered the last two steps.  This BB cream claims the skin will remain fresh in summer weather and after sweating, hmm… I was tempting to see how true the claim.

Test the sample in a less humid day (sunny, humidity <60%). Well, I applied Magic BB cream on left side of my face and Super Magic BB cream on the right. After 6 hours in normal room temperature, both sides became more dewy, not the oily shine, but it looked acceptable on my dry-combination skin in dry season.

Later I went to half an hour gym at my place. Sweat a lot, noticing the BB creams was really water-resistant, the sweat appeared clear while sliding down my face! Even though I gently blotted the face with tissue, it showed very faint stain on the tissue. Inevitably the face did look oily shine in the gym, but back to normal after tissue blotting.

Left: Super Magic;  Right: Magic

Hanskin Magic BB cream compare-2

My hand was very dry during the testing, but I purposely didn’t prime it with anything in order to justify the best of these two BB creams.

From above mentioned comparison, did you notice the Super Magic BB cream has better moisture than Magic BB cream? When tested on face, Super Magic BB cream was blurring the fine lines satisfactory upon applying it , where Magic BB cream was quite drying to highlight them, however skin looked better moisturized after start to excrete sebum. Therefore, Magic BB cream is suitable for oilier skin, while Super Magic BB cream for drier skin.

Hanskin Magic BB cream

As a conclusion, I still not fond of BB cream. BB cream obviously is makeup more than skin care, I could have a proper foundation for better polished skin, not to say many foundation nowaday tend to be skin care friendly. May be I haven’t met my ideal BB cream.

Again, I received the lovely samples via DHC Dec magazine mailing. Q10 is a crazy hit years ago, although many potent antioxidants have been developed and utilized in skin care at latter time, but Q10 seemed popular still. Talking about Q10 skin care, I think DHC is one of the popular choices.

Since I’ve gotten a breakout experience with DHC skin care, I now stick to their body care, hair care and supplements only. Thanks to their free sample system, I learnt more about their product and satisfied my curiosity at the same time. Of course, in Thailand I got to keep the membership alive by making any DHC purchase at least every 3 months.

DHC Q10 Lotion (THB1200/150ml)

This is fragrance-free, a water like lotion with faint peachy color. It absorbs into skin quickly, feeling gentle and comfortable like any DHC lotion.

Ingredients:

Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycosyl Trehalose, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Hydrogeneted Starch Hydrolysate, Ubiquinone, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Biotin, Cyanocobalamin.

DHC Q10 Milk (THB1300/100ml)

This is fragrance-free too. This is exactly gel like, I’ve no idea why DHC called it milk. It feels slippery and runny on skin (excuse me, it got me thinking of phlegm at the beginning). Leaving skin shinny and slightly tacky to touch until the gel is fully settled. I think only a small amount needed each time for easy absorption if the skin is on oilier side. Overall good moisturizing but blackheads are also come along unwelcomely.

Ingredients:

Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Phenoxyethanol, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Sterols, Carbomer, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Tocotrienols, Potassium Hydroxide, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ubiquinone, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Biotin, Cyanocobalamin, Sodium Riboflavin Phosphate.

Generally I think the Q10 lotion and milk are gentle and suitable to all skin types, especially young skin which only need basic and simple skin care.

Honey mask

Honey… is something you won’t mind to taste in your mouth and on your skin. The Scentio Honey & Royal Jelly Face Pack is available locally at all Beauty Buffet beauty shops.

beautybuffet shop - mbk outlet

Majority of Beauty Buffet’s cosmetics are relatively low priced with average quality, but some of their skin care products are still worth to check out, this honey mask is my pick.

The gel-like sweet honey paste is easily glides onto skin, gently massage to enhance the absorption and leave for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with clean water, done. Skin is softer for sure but no terrific moisturizing effect. For that, I normally damped the skin with a lotion before mask for better moisturizing.

However, this mask does has a “secret weapon” to compensate its shortcoming, there is the Gigawhite whitening formulation. I learned Gigawhite from a beauty book, the formula consists of seven Swiss alpine plants that inhibit activeness of tyrosinase (melanin formation enzyme), suppress and prevents dark spot. Therefore, I can expect a whitening result from the mask too. Indeed, my skin always looked brighter after application.  For soothing purpose, I love to use it whenever my fickle sensitive skin started to misbehave or after being in outdoor activities.

Gigawhite fomulation

Nonetheless, the only complaint from me, it actually irritates the eyes if I applied the honey paste close to eye area.  Therefore, avoid eye area. I never tried eatable honey for mask, but I do suspect the irritation caused by the plant extract.

All in all, this is gentle and comfortable to use at any time that I wanted to. I actually didn’t expect it turned out to be so nice, yet the retail price is only 225 baht for 250ml, and the mask is able to last at least 6 months.

Rating: ….)))  Good  Good. Willing to buy again.

L'Occitane cherry blossom shower gel

I am all about soap when concerning about body cleansing, but received this 75ml Cherry Blossom shower gel is definitely something cheering.

This pale pinkish shower liquid gel is strongly fragranced, however I am really pleased with zest of cherry blossom, pampering my mood even transforming my mood. Using a shower sponge can lathers into generous bubble, imagine I am the *Bubbles* of power puff girl, placid and adorable.

L'Occitane Cherry Blossom3

Skin is squeaky clean smooth and might be drying after warm shower in dry season. I used this whenever I was in the mood. The fragrance  was lingering around (even my long hair ) for a while depends how much I used, the more amount I used, the stronger the fragrance.

L'Occitane Cherry Blossom2

This is not something good for skin care purpose yet not my most favorite scent, but it surely cheers me up and turned me into a happily singing bubble… la~la~la~la~la~
