Beautyknot ~ My Skin Care Diary

Archive for January 2009

This is convenient to use when I have re-do my makeup or for any reason I have to clean my face again in short time from the first cleansing.

The utena mayu cleansing sheet contains silk powder for mild exfoliation, amino acids for hydration, alcohol for refreshing sensation which I didn’t think it is necessary. Fragrance is very light and unnoticeable. To cleanse, wipe the cleansing sheet according to the skin texture and rinse with clean water then. It is only sufficient for light makeup removing.

I still trust more on cleansing power of cleansing oil, although cleansing sheet is more convenient and non-oily. Utena recommends to use together with Mayu face washing powder which contains alcohol as well, otherwise I would like to purchase the face washing powder. The alcohol content in the cleansing sheet irritates my sensitive skin sometimes.

Rating: …)))  so-so So so. Will not buy again.

Water, PEG-12 Laurate, Butylene Glycol, Alcohol, Silk Powder, Dipropylene Glycol, Serine, Sodium PCA, Sodium Lactate, Arginine, Aspartic Acid, PCA, Glycine, Alanine, Valine, Proline, Threonine, Isoleucine, Histidine, Phenylalanine, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Fragrance.

Since I had tried the Everish Charcoal Facial scrub from Utena Japan, I was interested of their other skincare products. The Lamuca emollient sheet mask targets dehydrated or dry skin, loaded plenty amino acids for abundant hydration, although it contains alcohol in lower concentration, but my skin is fine with it.

I like it’s fragrance free, oil free, purely hydrating. The sheet mask is type of paper mask, if stretch too hard, the paper mask will split off easily, therefore it is not very stretchable. The mask fits my face very well, leaves my skin fully hydrated, translucent complexion and pores were also refined. I applied the mask on face for 15-20 minutes, after toner/lotion as recommended, then massage the residue into skin without wash-off as the essence is quickly absorded. Anyhow, I still need a good moisturizer later to retain the hydration, else, the hydrating is only temporary.

There are 6 pieces of the mask in a pack, each filled with 15ml of hydrating essence. In Thailand, it is available at major Watson pharmacy for only 535 baht for 6 pieces of mask. It sells cheaper in Taiwan and Japan by the way.

Rating : … ))) excellent  Excellent. Willing to buy again.

Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Peg-30, Peg-75, Betaine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium PCA, Sorbitol, Serine, Glycine, Glutamic acid, Alanine, Lysine, Arginine, Threonine, Proline, Phenoxethanol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Xanthan Gum, Soluble Collagen, Hydrolyzed Elastin, Sodium Citrate, Glycosaminoglycans, Whey, Alcohol, Sodium Dilauramidoglutamide Lysine, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

I had stopped using any sheet mask for about a year after I found cream mask was more budget friendly. However, Olay Total Effects Anti-aging Stretch Mask triggered my desire to try sheet mask again, after all the price for the anti-aging mask was very attractive.

The Olay sheet mask was cloth type which is thick, flexible, stretchable and fully loaded by Olay Total Effects essence. Because the eye cutting was quite small, it was a little bit inconvenient to be placed on my eye area precisely. On the other hand, with no cutting edges, the mask sheet could be fully stretching to fit your face accurately. The mask also steady adhered even I walked around at home. The fragrance was quite mild and I was pleasant with it on.

After 20 minutes as Olay recommended, I could sense my skin was firmer by pressing my finger on cheek although I didn’t see the refined pores, yet to mention I have done exfoliation before the mask. May be I could only see better result with frequent use. The firming effect was also temporary for about a day. I do wash off the residue after the mask because, again the essence is simply too rich, difficult to sink into the skin and potentially cause me breakout particularly daily use.

Olay Total Effects Anti-aging Stretch Mask is selling at 149 baht per piece or 549 baht for 4 pieces in Thailand.

Rating: …)))  good  Good. May buy again.

Water, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Glycerin, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Isopropyl Isostearate, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Benzyl Alcohol, Sucrose Polycottonseedate, Allantoin, Carnosine, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetearyl Glucoside, Cetearyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Citric Acid, Ethylparaben, Laureth-7, Propylparaben, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Pisum Sativum (Pea) Extract, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3, Sodium Citrate, Tocopherol, Potassium Sorbate, Chlorphenesin

Facial washing powder usually found in Japan skincare. I had strange infatuation for powder type facial wash, I think they have good cleansing power, usually non-drying, usually gentle to use, less possibility to buy the wrong one, less chemical… etc.

*HABA Powder Wash – 80g/S$ 37

The powder is not as finely-milled compares to the other powders in this post but totally gentle to skin even it has mild exfoliation property. It doesn’t foam very much, but generated foam are sufficient to cleanse face well. My skin feel clean and moist then. Haba skincare didn’t contain perservative according to their ingredient list but there is no indication for the product safety period like Fancl. I bought the 80g and finished it after 6 months, no idea if it safe to use after two months though I didn’t experience any irritation from it.

Rating :   … )))  excellent  Excellent. Will buy again.

Microcrystalline Cellulose, Sodium Lauryl Phosphate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Water, Lauryl Betaine, Sodium Lauroyl Methylaminopropionate, Squalane, Papain

*FANCL Washing Powder ( Normal & Light ) – 50g/600 baht

I haved used both normal and light version. The normal version is for normal to dry skin whereas light version  is for normal to oily skin. Powder is very finely-milled, Fancl recommended use a puff to create more foam, however I was using my hands instead of puff because I couldn’t assure myself that the puff will not be make home by bacterias. By using hands, powder also creates creamy foam well to cleanse my face easily. The moisturing version leaves skin very smooth and moisture while the light version gives fresher skin.  I like both versions, in fact I favoured normal version for my combination skin because my skin is more hydrated with daily use.

Since Fancl skincare is preservative-free, the facial wash should be use within 60 days once opened. (1 year from manufacturing date if unopened and sealed) I was using twice a day, still unable to finish the 50g in 60 days, so I use as generous as possible each time. By the way, using puff or foaming ball will required more powder each time, also take note not to use hot water to lather the washing powder because they are corn starch based which will cause lumpy with hot water. Overall, a little bit expensive because of the due date, but definitely worth the price.

Rating (Light):  … )))  good Good. May buy again.

Ingredients (Light):
Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Mannitol, Glucose, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sodium Palmoyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauroyl Aspartaye, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Talc, Agar, Serine, Allantoin, Dextran Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride.

Rating (Normal):  … )))  excellent Excellent. Will buy again.

Ingredients (Normal):
Mannitol, Sodium Palmoyl Glutamate, Glucose, Potassium, Myristoyl Glutamate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Pullulan,  Sodium Lauroyl Aspartaye, Potassium Myristate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Serine,  Allantoin, Dextran Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride.

*KOSE Sekkisei White Powder Wash – 100g/1100 baht

So far, this is the only facial powder wash that gives me taut feeling after cleansing which I dislike. The powder is fraganced, powder is very fine, foaming very well, cleansing power is good, but taut. Besides, this included whitening ingredients which different from other washing powders that I tried but that’s not important to me for a cleanser.  The powder can last me 8 months, I use in evening only, too drying for me to use in morning.

Talc, Sodium Myristate, Potassium Myristate, Sodium Laurate, Potassium Laurate, Sodium Palmitate, Potassium Palmitate, Lauric Acid, Water (Aqua), Angelica Acutiloba Root Extra, Coix Lacryma-Jobi (Job’s Tears) Seed Extract, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Perilla Ocymoides Leaf Extract, Polyphosphorylcholine Glycol Acrylate, Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Methylparaben, Fragrance (Parfum)

Rating :  … )))  so-so  So so. Will not buy again.

Personally I prefer non-fragranced facial wash powder like Haba and Fancl. Haba is not available in Thailand yet, but Fancl make me no regret of it.

I like the design of the Majolica Majorca single eye shadow. It can be slot in and slot out, playful and beautiful. This suppose to look like pink colour, somehow it appears as golden on my eye lid under fluorescent light. Ideal for base shadow instead of using alone.

I do like the subtle shimmer effect on my eye lid. The eye shadow easily pick up by eye brush or finger, buildable pigmentation, smooth, not overly glittering and it brighten my eyes instantly, vividly and lively. I normally use lipstick for my eye shadow as well (ok, I ‘m boring person in makeup), but I need something to disguise my fatigued eye. This Majolica Majorca Shadow Customize  BE286 seems good enough as eye base.

When I tested the shadow customizes on my hand in Watson pharmacy, every colour looks like no much significant different beside shinny glittering, and the pigmentation is not really appearing. Anyway, I still happy with this eye shadow as shadow base and it lasts well on my eyes lid for whole day, fade a little bit after few hours but still acceptable to me. By the way I don’t have super oily eye lid. This is available in major Watson pharmacy Thailand for 230 baht.

Utena Japan is a popular drugstore brand from Japan. I have good feeling about any charcoal deep-cleansing product, so when I saw this facial scrub in local Watsons pharmacy, I knew I’ll  not going to miss it. Charcoal is effective ingredient to remove dirt, oil and skin dead cells. Previously, I was quite happy with Origins Clear Improvement charcoal mask.

The Utena Everish Charcoal Washing Scrub contains walnut granules for gentle yet effective exfoliation. Those granules are neither harsh nor coarse overly, in fact, they are finer than most of the facial scrubs such as St’lves Apricot Scrub. The scent is not offensive to me, lathers moderately,  I can feel my face is immediately smoother after the scrubbing.

I have used facial scrub from other brands like Pond, St’lves, Olay, Biore, Biotherm, they were either too harsh, or drying or  lousy cleansing power to me, but not this ONE! This is the best facial scrub to me so far! Though it could be useless to stubborn blackhead. I was using this 1-2 times a week, it didn’t irritate my sensitive combination skin but I avoided it when skin is sensitive.

I use about 1-1.5 cm every time ( Product recommend 1.5cm ), super lasting as it still has 70% full after 2 months use. The Utena Everish Charcoal Washing Scrub is retailing at 220 baht for 135g in major Watsons phamarcy,Thailand. The range comes with 3 types of facial scrubs, Charcoal with walnut, Walnut and Peach. By the way, the ingredient listed below are packed for all the three types everish facial scrubs which I believe the ingredient list belongs to the Peach facial scrub. However, all the utena products ingredient (in Japanese) were available on their website.

Rating : … )))  excellent Excellent. Willing to buy again.

Update on 28/06/2009:

After using this for 6 months with 1-3 times a week, it still has about 50% left. It is so long-lasting! Great value. Only issue is, it’s soap-based that could be drying for drier skin.

DHC Japan probably sell most expensive in Thailand, but this didn’t stop me from the star ingredient, organic olive oil which sources from Spain. Despite its home delivery sales system, I prefer personally feel the product consistency before any purchase to be make.

DHC has a beauty store & spa in Siam Paragon shopping mall, Bangkok, and the beauty store has a product testing zone that you may test out all their skincare and makeup before you decide to buy any product. Meanwhile the beauty consultant is very friendly to let you feel free to test as much as possible.

I also received a sample gift while registered their Olive Club Membership. The beauty consultant gave me the sample gift of Olive Leaf Series that suitable for sensitive and dry skin to me, instead of basic olive oil essential set. In January, humidity in Bangkok goes down to 31% while temperature shoots up to 33-34 degree Celsius, I will see how the Olive Leaf Series do to my skin.

What I like about DHC is they will send you a free monthly Olive Club Magazine about their latest promotion and product info, or you may get the free magazine at the beauty store in Siam Paragon. I do think the Japanese cover girl of the monthly magazine is charming and adorable. You may copy the pretty make-up as inside the magazine, it list all the DHC make-up items to be used for the cover girl.

I will only review my DHC haul when I finish my existing skincare product to avoid confusion, test in systematic approach by slowly add the product into my skincare routine   and make sure I have use it long enough to give the better opinion. If you interested in DHC, you might want to check their website (US for English, TW for Chinese, TH for Thai) for detailed info, including full list ingredients and price of every products in their website.
